The Republic of Moldova will benefit from a non-reimbursable technical assistance, worth 4.5 million dollars, for the implementation of the project “Sustainable Transition to Energy Efficiency in Moldova”. The Parliament ratified today the Grant Agreement between the Republic of Moldova, the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the International Development Association.

The grant will cover the costs of operationalizing a sustainable financing mechanism in the field of energy efficiency in public buildings and for financing energy audits of buildings that will be renovated within the framework of the project.

The financial resources are also intended for strengthening the capacities of employees of the Ministry of Energy, the National Center for Sustainable Energy, JSC “Termoelectrica” and the Consolidated Unit for the Implementation of Energy Projects.

The “Sustainable Energy Efficiency Transition in Moldova” project has a total budget of 54.5 million US dollars, of which 50 million will be provided as a loan by the IBRD and 4.5 million as a grant, provided by the Multi-Donor Trust Fund “Moldova – Development, Resilience and Opportunities for Well-being (M-GROW)”.

The financial resources will be invested in the energy renovation of 46 schools across the country, as well as in the modernization of the centralized heating system of the Chisinau municipality. The project will improve the learning conditions for approximately 46 thousand students, teachers and auxiliary staff. It is estimated that the renovation and modernization works will lead to a reduction of over 50% in energy consumption in the targeted buildings.

The project "Sustainable Transition through Energy Efficiency in Moldova" will run between 2024 and 2029 and will be managed by the Consolidated Unit for Implementation and Monitoring of Energy Projects (UCIPE).
