The Government today authorized the construction of two new efficient cogeneration power plants with a total capacity of 55 MW of electricity and at least 43 Gcal/h of heat. They will replace the former CET-1 which has been in operation since 1951 and will contribute to increasing the country's domestic electricity generation capacity and energy security.

The plants will operate with internal combustion engines, which is a flexible technology with potential also for balancing Moldova's energy system - much needed for the development of renewable energy sources. At the same time, the new power plants will contribute to the development of the district heating system in the Chisinau municipality and to the efficient and reliable supply of thermal energy to consumers.

The construction of the two power plants is planned until the end of 2025 and is financially supported by the World Bank under the Project for Improving the Efficiency of the Centralized Thermal Energy Supply System (PIESACET-2), and the value of the works is 92 million Euro.
