The Republic of Moldova has requested the activation of the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism, seeking international assistance for the urgent installation of new electricity generation capacities. The decision, approved today by the Commission for Exceptional Situations, provides for the free transfer to Moldova of a 125 MW power plant and 10 smaller plants with a combined capacity of 100 MW. The smaller plants could be installed within three to five months. Another request involves procuring 100 generators for medical, social, and educational institutions in the security zone.

The new power plants will be installed at Termoelectrica and CET Nord, state-owned cogeneration companies with the necessary infrastructure for both natural gas supply and connections to the electricity grid.

According to Constantin Borosan, State Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, once installed, these plants will increase Moldova's electricity generation capacity by at least 125 MW, and if the 10 smaller plants are received, the total will reach 225 MW. These capacities will help meet final energy consumption after the heating season ends when cogeneration plants will cease producing thermal energy and consequently reduce electricity output.

With the end of the heating season in spring, the cogeneration plants are expected to generate around 40–50 MW to produce domestic hot water. During the summer months, the electric load of the cogeneration plants drops to around 15 MW.

In spring and summer, electricity production from renewable sources increases significantly, with a capacity of approximately 600 MW at the beginning of this year.

The remaining electricity needed will be imported.

Constantin Borosan emphasized that with the warming weather, energy consumption is expected to decrease, meaning these sources will cover the required consumption. Meanwhile, according to 2024 data, the volume of electricity purchased during the winter months is comparable to the summer months.
