The government has approved the draft law on the labeling of energy-related products, an updated version of the EU directive in this area, the main novelty of which is the simplification of the information displayed about the energy consumption of products placed on the market or put into service. This will make it easier for citizens to understand how much energy each unit consumes, so that they can make conscious choices to make their household energy consumption more efficient, which ultimately affects their monthly bills.

One of the provisions of the legislative initiative is to change the energy classes from A+++ to D at present to A to G, thus taking over the standards in force in the European Union. Currently, the most efficient household appliances fall into category B, leaving room for technological developments to be placed in category A.

The aim of the directive that the Republic of Moldova is transposing was to clarify and update the previous provisions, taking into account the innovations and technological advances achieved in recent years in terms of energy efficiency of energy-related products.

The transposition of the EU directive will also help future programs that the Energy Ministry is preparing together with the Energy Efficiency Agency, with the support of the European Union and UNDP Moldova, such as the ecovoucher, for the replacement of old and energy inefficient household appliances.

Under the new law, specific regulations will be drawn up for each energy-related product, and the quality of products will be checked by the State Inspectorate for Non-Food Product Supervision and Consumer Protection.
