The German Government, through the German International Cooperation Agency (GIZ Moldova), will invest over the next three years €5 million in energy efficiency projects and capacity building for the Ministry of Energy and the Energy Efficiency Agency, which will be reorganized into the National Center for Sustainable Energy.

"The Republic of Moldova needs support in the process of energy transition and decarbonization, especially in terms of significantly reducing energy costs for citizens and business, in the context that about 50% of the energy consumed in our country goes to the maintenance of buildings. It's a long road, but we have to go down it, and GIZ will help us to accelerate the speed of realization of the decarbonization agenda", said Energy Minister Victor Parlicov at the launch event of the new project.

The Energy Minister also thanked the German partners for their support in the energy field and noted that citizens expect visible results.

Over the years GIZ has implemented several projects to improve the energy efficiency of public buildings, such as schools, kindergartens, hospitals, German Ambassador to Moldova Margret Maria Uebber emphasized.

"Energy security has become an important question for Moldova. Not only has the government successfully managed to end its dependence on Russian gas, but it has also embarked on the path of ending its dependence on a single source and diversifying its energy sources. In this context, renewable energy and energy efficiency play a major role", added German Ambassador Margret Maria Uebber.

Through the project launched on Wednesday, November 8, Germany will also support the development of the Residential Energy Efficiency Fund managed by the National Center for Sustainable Energy, which will provide subsidies for owners of individual houses and apartments. The support and learning of best practices will also benefit the local government officials involved.
