The progress of reforms in the energy sector, as well as measures to integrate Moldova's electricity market into the European one, were discussed by the State Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Constantin Borosan, at the Energy Community Electricity Forum, which is taking place in Athens. The event brought together energy experts and officials to discuss and develop policies aimed at strengthening the energy system in Europe and its neighboring countries. During the panel discussion on the Reform of the organization of the electricity market, recently approved by the EU Council, the participants discussed the new Growth Plan for the Western Balkans and the EU's support plans for the integration of the energy markets of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine into the European market by the end of 2025. Key topics included the transposition and implementation of the Electricity Integration Package, energy transition and investments in renewable energy. "The Republic of Moldova has made enormous progress in the process of strengthening the energy sector and diversifying the sources of energy supply. We have strategic energy interconnection projects under way with the European system, and with access to the Romanian OPCOM exchange, the Republic of Moldova has alternatives for procuring electricity at more favorable prices. At the same time, we are increasing the potential of producing energy from renewable sources, which is the cheapest source at the moment", said Constantin Borosan. Constantin Borosan also referred to Moldova's progress in the process of implementing the EU energy acquis and adapting the energy tax legislation to support the energy transition and attract investment. "The team of the Ministry of Energy has made colossal progress in the process of transposition of national legislation to EU requirements. We have 5 draft normative acts in the process of public consultation, aimed at harmonizing legislation and modernizing the sector. Similarly, the third energy package has already been transposed and is in the process of implementation, and the certification of the Transmission System Operator of the electricity transmission system is being realized. We have a clear vision regarding the adaptation of the Fiscal Code to allow the functioning of the energy market according to EU rules, so that we can ensure competition among suppliers," said Constantin Borosan. The panelists also discussed measures to protect consumers from potential price hikes, accelerating the use of renewable energy and improving consumer protection. The Forum concluded with a call to action for the Contracting Parties to accelerate efforts to transpose and implement the Electricity Integration Package and to continue to work towards the goals of market integration and energy transition. Next steps include meeting the timetable for transposition, developing the necessary infrastructure and increasing investment in renewable energy to ensure a sustainable and secure energy future. The Energy Community Forum runs from June 5-6 in Athens, now in its 29th edition.
