Cybersecurity needs of the energy sector discussed with experts from the European External Action Service

The current situation and the needs of the energy sector in the field of cybersecurity were discussed by State Secretary Cristina Pereteatcu with a mission of the European External Action Service (EEAS). EEAS experts are gathering information in Chisinau in order to plan future support from the European Commission in the field of cybersecurity and the digitalization of the energy sector.
“We are in the process of finalizing the Energy Strategy of the Republic of Moldova until 2050, which also outlines our vision for the digitalization of the energy sector. In parallel, an audit of enterprises in the sector is being developed, which will indicate the necessary actions and budget, but already at this point it is clear that sufficient qualified human resources represent a challenge for the sector,” said Cristina Pereteatcu.
Among the programs for digitizing the sector, both strengthening the capacities of companies in the sector to cope with EU standards and the challenges of hybrid attacks were mentioned, as well as long-term programs, such as the installation of smart meters that will allow for more accurate measurement and management of household consumption. Also, strengthening and digitizing the networks will allow for the integration of more renewables into the network.
Another topic addressed was innovation in the energy sector, in this regard, legislation on innovative testing spaces, known as Sandbox, which will allow testing of new technologies with exemptions from the legislation in force, has already been approved.
