The Tender Commission for awarding the status of large eligible producer opened on Thursday the technical bids submitted under the second tender for the construction of wind power plants with a total capacity of 170 MW and battery energy storage systems with a minimum capacity of 44 MWh.

By the submission deadline, 16 bids had been submitted by investors interested in developing renewable energy projects in the Republic of Moldova. Following the eligibility assessment, the technical bids of the qualified participants were opened on Thursday. The total capacity proposed by the bidders significantly exceeds the volume offered in the tender, with bids covering more than 423 MW of wind generation capacity and over 305 MWh of energy storage capacity.

“The strong interest from investors confirms the attractiveness of the Republic of Moldova’s energy sector and the business community’s confidence in the policies promoted by the Government. Strong competition in this tender creates favourable conditions for achieving competitive prices, ensuring energy supply for domestic consumption, lower prices, and attracting significant investment in the country’s energy infrastructure,” said Minister of Energy Dorin Junghietu.

The tender represents an important step in implementing the Republic of Moldova’s objectives for the development of renewable energy sources and strengthening energy security. Unlike the first round of tenders, the current exercise also includes an obligation to install energy storage capacities, which are intended to contribute to the flexibility and stability of the National Electricity System.

Prior to this stage, the Tender Commission and the relevant state authorities assessed the eligibility of the companies participating in the tender. At the next stage, the Tender Commission will evaluate the technical documentation, after which the financial bids submitted by the participants will be opened, in accordance with the tender documentation and the applicable legal framework.

The selected projects will benefit from the status of large eligible producers and a guaranteed purchase of the electricity generated for a period of 15 years. This mechanism provides investment predictability and facilitates access to the financing required for the implementation of the projects.

For the Republic of Moldova, the new capacities will contribute to diversifying renewable energy sources, particularly given that solar energy currently accounts for approximately two-thirds of the country’s installed renewable energy capacity.

In recent years, the Republic of Moldova has recorded one of the fastest rates of growth in renewable energy generation capacity in the region. Installed renewable energy capacity exceeded 1 GW in 2026, compared to just 76 MW in 2020.

The second tender for awarding the status of large eligible producer targets the development of 170 MW of wind power capacity and energy storage systems with a minimum capacity of 44 MWh. The integration of storage capacities will enable more efficient use of renewable energy and contribute to reducing imbalances in the electricity system.

The results of the tender will be announced after the evaluation process has been completed.
