November 20, 2024, Chisinau - The solid biofuels market in the Republic of Moldova will be improved and adjusted to European standards. A Regulation to this effect was approved today, during the meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers, at the initiative of the Ministry of Energy.
The document replaces the previous framework and refers to a complete list of European standards that must be respected by producers, providing market surveillance authorities with a clear regulatory and monitoring framework.
"Consumers must clearly understand what they are buying. The calorific value of a product is an essential indicator that must be communicated transparently. The adoption of this Regulation will impose strict rules for labeling and certification, so that each user can make informed choices and have the guarantee of a quality product," said the Minister of Energy, Victor Parlicov.
The new Regulation will contribute to improving the quality of biofuels, increasing consumer confidence, developing the solid biofuels market and promoting investments in the sector. Therefore, increasing the use of solid biofuels in the national energy mix will contribute to diversifying energy sources and reducing dependence on imports.
According to data from the National Center for Sustainable Energy (CNED), there are currently 42 active solid biofuel producers and over 300 public institutions that heat with biomass.
The project was developed with the support of UNDP and the Government of Japan.
