The essential wards of 22 republican and district hospitals in the Republic of Moldova will be provided with reliable electricity in case of disconnections, thanks to high-performance generators donated by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), worth 710 thousand dollars.

With the support of development partners, all hospitals in the country have generators and are ready to ensure the safety of patients and the reliability of medical equipment in the event of a power outage.

Present at the event to hand over such a generator to the Republican Hospital "Timofei Moșneaga", Energy Minister Victor Parlicov thanked the US Embassy and USAID for their support to the Republic of Moldova. "In the last year and a half our efforts have been focused on energy security. Including USAID's Moldova Energy Security Project (MESA) has helped us to ensure uninterrupted operation of essential services. Moldelectrica, Termoelectrica, Apă-canal received generators. In the case of hospitals, the disconnection of electricity can sometimes cost human lives", said Minister Victor Parlicov.

Cooperation with MESA and the Ministry of Health will continue, the official added. "From today we can work on long-term initiatives. We have already started a number of projects, but we are still working on finalizing a financing instrument dedicated to energy efficiency in public buildings. We want to reduce the maintenance costs of medical institutions, which are huge today, and redirect the money saved to patients, equipment and medicines," Minister Victor Parlicov added.

In 2023, USAID, through the Energy Security Project of the Republic of Moldova, invested a total of US$ 1.3 million to purchase 53 emergency power generators with a total capacity exceeding 4 MW, which were distributed to 22 hospitals in the country, as well as to the companies Moldelectrica, Termolectrica, CET-Nord and Apă-Canal Chisinau.

At the same time, with the support of the European Union, in the coming years several national and district hospitals will improve the energy efficiency of their buildings and will be equipped with photovoltaic panels to partially cover their consumption. The Ministry of Energy has also proposed to set up an energy efficiency fund through which the savings obtained by public institutions with modernized infrastructure can be used to refinance other energy efficiency projects. This new mechanism will further expand ongoing projects.
