Strengthening energy security and accelerating investments in renewable energy through the development of storage capacities and interconnection infrastructure are at the core of the Republic of Moldova’s energy strategy. This message was delivered by Dorin Junghietu, Minister of Energy, during Energy Week Black Sea 2026, held in Bucharest on 4–5 February, which brought together policymakers, investors, and experts from across the Black Sea region.

During a panel discussion on the transition to clean energy, the Minister highlighted the importance of the upcoming tender for up to 173 MW of onshore wind energy, combined with modern battery energy storage systems (BESS), a critical initiative to increase flexibility and stability in the national energy system.

“The upcoming tender is designed to provide investors with predictability, transparency, and long-term stability. Mandatory integration of storage capacities is not merely a technical option but a strategic necessity for the safe operation of the energy system and the integration of an increasing volume of renewable energy,” said Minister Dorin Junghietu.

The official reiterated that the Government of the Republic of Moldova is committed to maintaining a clear and predictable regulatory framework, aligned with the targets set in the Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan 2025–2030 and the Energy Strategy 2050. He emphasized the need to remove vulnerabilities in the national energy system and highlighted the critical role of new regional interconnections.

“Last week’s incident, when the Republic of Moldova faced a partial blackout, demonstrated how crucial it is to act promptly and continue modernizing the energy sector. Interconnections with Romania are vital for the resilience of our system and for managing unforeseen situations,” stated Dorin Junghietu.

In this context, the Minister emphasized that the development of the Vulcănești–Chișinău, Bălți–Suceava, and Strășeni–Gutinaș transmission lines plays a vital role in ensuring the stability of Moldova’s energy system, facilitating cross-border energy exchanges, and integrating into the European energy market. He also thanked Romanian partners for their continued support in implementing these critical infrastructure projects.

Furthermore, Dorin Junghietu called on international investors and development partners to actively participate in the upcoming wind energy and storage tender, stressing that Moldova offers real opportunities for sustainable and bankable investments.

“We need solid investments, long-term partnerships, and modern solutions to strengthen our energy resilience. The new tender represents a clear opportunity for investors to contribute to the transformation of Moldova’s energy system and to the energy security of the entire region,” the Minister emphasized.

Energy Week Black Sea is the main regional event dedicated to the energy transition, annually bringing together governments, utility operators, developers, investors, and financial institutions from Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova, Ukraine, Türkiye, and Georgia. The event combines high-level conferences with B2B meetings and is internationally recognized for promoting investment and cooperation in renewable energy.
